Scholarship Award being Offered at Shawnee Community College
Shawnee Community College is now offering the Shawn Bridges
Scholarship Award. This Award is sponsored by Insurance Broker and
Minister Roy ”Buddy” Walls and wife Vicki Walls of Mounds Ill.
The Award was founded in remembrance of Shawn Bridges and to help keep
his life story, “No More Sunsets“, alive in hopes that it will, by example, keep
others from making the same mistakes, choices and/or
Giving-in-to the temptations that led Shawn to an early grave, at the age of 35.
This Award will help give opportunities to young people who other wise might
not have a chance to further their education, in hopes of having a better life for
themselves, their families, giving back to their communities and helping others
in the future.
Any student selected for the Shawn Bridges Scholarship Award will be
required to maintain full-time status and work at least 10 hours per week. The
applicants must have graduated from a high school in the Shawnee
College District with a “C” average or better. He or she must submit a letter
along with the application giving a brief life history, need for the scholarship
and his or her long-term educational and Career
goals. Once all the materials are received, the selection committee will review
submissions and make a decision for the fall semester. Preference will be given
to students who have the greatest unmet financial need and are
graduates of the five county areas.
In order for the students to keep the scholarship a second semester, he or
she needs to earn 12 credit hours the previous semester and maintain a 2.0
grade-point average. The scholarship will be in the amount of $4,000
and will be applied toward tuition, fees, books, transportation and housing
($2,000 per year or $1,000 per fall and spring semester).
As the number of supporters, pledges and donations increase, the
scholarship funds increase and the number of students that can be helped and
scholarship amounts, will increase accordingly.
The Academic Community and Citizens of the five county area and the
future recipients of the Shawn Bridges Scholarship Award would like to thank:
